BOOKS OF THE WEEK

The Great Himalayan National Park: The Struggle to Save the Western Himalyas by Sanjeeva Pandey & Anthony J Gaston

ABOUT THE BOOK
The great Himalayan National Park conservation area (ghnpca), a UNESCO world heritage site, is one of the most important protected areas in the Himalayas, one of the world’s great biological realms. The book is intended both as a history and an ecological overview of the park as well as a plea for continuing conservation of the rich legacy of Himalayan plants and animals. In addition to descriptions of the ecology, the book includes local history and Culture and a review of current development in the region. The inscription of the park into the UNESCO world heritage list in 2014 confirmed the outstanding universal values of the area, which contains the most important and significant natural habitats for in-situ conservation of Western Himalayan biological diversity. The pictures, taken by the authors and their collaborators, vividly illustrate the grandeur and diversity of the area. The book has universal appeal: to naturalists, scholars, resource managers, trekkers, arm-chair traveller. Success and failure along the road to creating today’s Park are discussed frankly to inform future management efforts and there are numerous examples of conservation in action that will motivate a new generation of naturalists and ecologists to continue the fight to protect the ecology of the greatest mountains on Earth.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
An officer of the Indian Forest Service (1982 batch), Sanjeeva Pandey has served as Director of GHNP from 1998 to 2006, where he engaged himself in biodiversity conservation through livelihood-based natural resource management. His efforts with Friends of GHNP have resulted in inscription of GHNP Conservation Area as a World Heritage Site in Doha, the State of Qatar, in June 2014. Sanjeeva has travelled to many countries and contributed to numerous training manuals, written peer reviewed papers, newspaper and journal and electronic media articles and formulated project proposals throughout his professional career. Anthony (Tony) Gaston has studied Indian wildlife, especially birds, since 1969, including research for his PhD (at Oxford University) around Delhi and in Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, the Narmada Valley and Kerala. He headed the initial 1980 and 1983 Himachal Wildlife Project, consisting of international teams of scientists, who surveyed Himalayan front-range ecosystems throughout Himachal Pradesh and recommended the creation of GHNP in its present location. Subsequently, he played a major role in supporting GHNP and was involved in developing the application for World Heritage status. He has trekked extensively in the Park and throughout the Western Himalayas and considers Himachal to be his spiritual home.

How to Fall in Love with Yoga
by Sarvesh Shashi

About the Book

Restorative and holistic, How to Fall in Love with Yoga is a stroll through the world of yoga, where Sarvesh Shashi encourages readers to experience the different facets of the practice. Through four key goals and accompanying poses and flows, the author deep dives into the basics of the practice. It is contemplative and inclusive, peppered with personal notes and experiences. How to Fall in Love with Yoga is as much about the body as it is about the spirit, and as much about fitness as it is about mindfulness.

Not bound by age, school, or style, the book will reach into the heart of yoga, cutting through all the noise, to share with the reader that which is true to the authentic and original form of the practice. The book will contain a youthful flavour as it walks the yogi – for there is a yogi within all of us – through different postures while providing context, additional information, and useful tips. The poses are easy-to-do at home and aim to build a love for yoga. It is why each section ends with meditation to help the practitioner relax and focus at the end of their goal.

BOOKS OF THE WEEK - 24Th July 2015

Autumn of the Matriarch : Indira Gandhi's Final Term in Office
By : Diego Maiorano

About the Book :
Indira Gandhi's last years in office as India's prime minister ran from January 1980 to her assassination in October 1984, but until now no book has been devoted to her final term. Among the principal themes discussed in this innovative volume are how Indian politics and society changed in the 1970s, including the Emergency (1975-77), Congress's response to insurgency in Punjab, Assam and Kashmir, the rise of new forms of political mobilization in the early 1980s and the prime minister's relationship with the key institutions of state. Maiorano also reveals how Mrs Gandhi's policies in the 1980s impacted on the big industrialists, the middle class, the rich peasantry and the poor, thereby crucially re-orienting India's economic strategy. Autumn of the Matriarch is the first major study of Mrs Gandhi's last years in power, an important juncture in India's recent history, as it saw the emergence of trends that influenced the country for the next three decades.
About the Author :
Diego Maiorano is a research fellow at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies, University of London. He has written several articles on Indian politics and society, most recently for Modern Asian Studies, World Development and Economic and Political Weekly.

BOOKS OF THE WEEK

COMPLETE
DO IT YOURSELF
MANUAL

About the Book :
This super-handy manual, first published in 1973, has received a major upgrade. Seventeen chapters' worth of fixer-upper opportunities are enhanced with more than 3,000 photos and illustrations that would look equally at home in an upscale home decorating catalogue. The first few chapters cover hand and power tools, fasteners and adhesives, and are enough to incite hardware envy among even dwellers of tiny apartments. There is strange beauty in the cutaway views of five different hollow-wall fasteners and the machinations of nine types of pliers. But homeowners are, of course, the real target audience, and an all-new section on Landscaping reflects this with entries on fences, water gardens and retaining walls. The plumbing section offers a mega-view of wastewater-treatment systems as well as a micro-exploration of unclogging a toilet. Another new section, Storage Projects, is full of cabinets and shelves that either "Swing-out" or "Fold-away." New technologies are generally overlooked in favor of meat-and-potatoes projects. For instance, a home satellite dish is pictured but not indexed or dwelled upon, while carpeting is charted, graphed and deconstructed in the extreme. Intriguing sidebars on wood refinishers (the fastest drying versus the safest), the financial benefits of renting specialty tools for a large drywall project and other subjects round out this must-have guide.

Focus The Hidden Driver Of Excellence
By - Daniel Goleman

About the Book :
For more than two decades, psychologist and journalist Daniel Goleman has been scouting the leading edge of the human sciences for what's new, surprising and important. In Focus, he delves into the science of attention in all its varieties, presenting long over due discussion of this little-noticed and under-rated mental asset that matters enormously for how we navigate life. Goleman boils down attention research into a three parts: inner, other and outer focus. Goleman shows why high-achievers need all three kinds of focus, as demonstrated by rich case studies from fields as diverse as competitive sports, education, the arts, and business. Those who excel rely on what Goleman calls Smart Practices such as mindfulness meditation, focused preparation and recovery, positive emotions and connections and mental 'prosthetics' that help them improve habits, add new skills, and sustain excellence. Combining cutting-edge research with practical findings, Focus reveals what distinguishes experts...

About the Author :
Daniel Goleman, a former science journalist for the New York Times, is the author of many books, including the international bestseller Emotional Intelligence. He cofounded the Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning at the Yale University Child Studies Center (now at the University of Illinois at Chicago). He lives in Massachusetts.
