The balance of global power changed profoundly over the course of the twentieth century, above all with the economic and political rise of Asia. Asia after Europe is a bold new interpretation of the period, focusing on the conflicting and overlapping ways in which Asians have conceived their bonds and their roles in the world. Tracking the circulation of ideas and people across colonial and national borders, Sugata Bose explores developments in Asian thought, art, and politics that defied EuroAmerican models and defined Asianness as a locus of solidarity for all humanity.

Impressive in scale, yet driven by the stories of fascinating and influential individuals, Asia after Europe examines early intimations of Asian solidarity and universalism preceding Japan’s victory over Russia in 1905; the revolutionary collaborations of the First World War and its aftermath, when Asian universalism took shape alongside Wilsonian internationalism and Bolshevism; the impact of the Great Depression and Second World War on the idea of Asia; and the persistence of forms of Asian universalism in the postwar period, despite the consolidation of postcolonial nation states on a European model.

Diverse Asian universalisms were forged and fractured through phases of poverty and prosperity, among elites and common people, throughout the span of the twentieth century. Noting the endurance of nationalist rivalries, often tied to religious exclusion and violence, Bose concludes with reflections on the continuing potential of political thought beyond European definitions of reason, nation, and identity.

About the Author

Sugata Bose is Gardiner Professor of Oceanic History and Affairs at Harvard University.He is the author of His Majesty's Opponent: Subhas Chandra Bose and India's Struggle against Empire and A Hundred Horizons: The Indian Ocean in the Age of Global Empire.

About the Author

Biography: Mehr Afshan Farooqi is a Professor of Urdu and South Asian Literature at the University of Virginia. Her research publications address complex issues of Urdu literary culture, particularly in the context of modernity. Farooqi is also a well-known translator, anthologist, and columnist. She has recently published Ghalib: A Wilderness at My Door Step, A Critical Biography (Penguin/Allen Lane, 2021). She is working on a memoir, A Book of Hearts and writes a featured column on Urdu literature past and present in the Dawn.

O.P. Singh had his first brush with law at an early age―soon after losing his father, the house he and his mother were staying in, alone, was burgled. The young boy was determined to take the matter to the police but was met with the apathy of the officers stationed in the small town. That event left its mark.

Today, Singh has had an illustrious career of thirty-seven years, one marked by unwavering diligence and concern for the office―an attitude that could not be more different from those police officers he came across all those years ago.
A 1983-batch Indian Police Service officer from the Uttar Pradesh (UP) cadre, Singh’s tenure as a civil servant has spanned positions not just in various districts of UP but significant roles heading central government services, such as the Central Industrial Security Force and the National Disaster Response Force. His command witnessed the successful handling of several sensitive events, including tackling insurgency in the Lakhimpur Kheri regions, supervising the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, maintaining law and order during the Ayodhya verdict and ensuring a smooth Kumbh Mela in 2019. Under his leadership, the Commissionerate system was established in Lucknow and Noida and Indian aid teams conducted relief operations in the 2015 Nepal earthquake. All in all, Singh’s journey has been marked by a concern for the people―whether the men under him or the citizens he served.
Crime, Grime and Gumption is a gritty account of field operations and encounters with militancy but equally a tale of everyday law enforcement and the ins and outs of a career devoted to policing for the people.

About the Author
Former Indian Police Service officer O.P. Singh has the unique distinction of having commanded three premier police organizations for close to six years. He was chief of India's largest police force (Uttar Pradesh Police) and also the world's stand-alone and multi-skilled response force (the National Disaster Response Force). He was also chief of the Central Industrial Security Force mandated to secure critical infrastructure and vital installations of the country. A recipient of the President's Police Medal for Distinguished Service and Police Medal for Gallantry, Singh is recognized for his role in introducing the police commissionerate system in UP.
Known for his innovative approach to law enforcement, he had led rescue operations during the 2015 Nepal earthquake. After retirement, he has been on advisory assignments to various institutions and served as the independent external monitor for Oil India Ltd, Cochin Shipyard Ltd and the Department of Post, Government of India. He is the security and risk adviser at NatWest Group Services and CEO of the India Child Protection Fund, an organization involved in protecting children from exploitation and abuse.
Besides reading, he enjoys listening to music, travelling and mentoring young aspirants for the civil services.
